Bellbrae was formed in about 1860 and described as low lying flats and rounded hills. The rural locality is located just off the Great Ocean Road, upstream from Jan Juc. It has mainly been home to hobby farms and/or produce farms.

Bellbrae boasts historical significance for the region and the well documented past is survived by the thriving Bellbrae Primary School (est. 1861) and bush cemetery. The quaint School Road is home to the Bellbrae Public Hall, SES, football oval, tennis courts and a playground.

Bellbrae is attracting families who desire open green space. Torquay is a short drive away offering beaches, cafes, health care, shopping, nurseries and wineries.
